Rising pop culture icon Olivia Dunne has attracted attention fast, but not without difficulties. She is traveling with security and staying away from in-person classes because of worries for her safety. Positively, she received a $500,000 payout for a social media post, and the 2021 NCAA rule change that permits athletes to make money off of their name and likeness has helped her income considerably.
Dunne has skillfully turned the tables on negativity in the context of a sizable fan base by using it as a source of creative inspiration. Her success can be attributed to her amazing ability to turn jokes made about her into interesting content. Her rise to prominence has been largely attributed to her distinctive attitude, among other things. Her creative approach is crucial to her success since it not only engages but also enthralls her audience.
During the 2020 lockout, Olivia Dunne, an exceptional gymnast at LSU, gained immense popularity via her TikTok videos. With more than 10 million fans, this 21-year-old phenomenon has captured the attention of viewers all around the world. She made fun of her boyfriend’s attention to a New Orleans Saints game in a recent post, expressing her own fascination with the cheering routines. Her quick ascent to fame is highlighted by her transformation from a gymnast sharing routines to a billionaire influencer.
Paul Skenes was chosen as the Pittsburgh Pirates’ number-one pick in the 2023 MLB Draft due to his outstanding performance at LSU, where he posted a 12-2 record and an incredible 1.69 ERA. Olivia Dunne, on the other hand, profited greatly from the 2021 NCAA rule change that let collegiate athletes make money off of their reputation and name. According to recent reports, Dunne’s incredible financial success in 2023 was highlighted when it was reported that she made a whopping $50,000 for a single social media post.

Olivia Dunne’s social media skills could propel Paul Skenes into a baseball superstar before he even takes the field. Their collaboration suggests a meteoric ascent to become one of the league’s most renowned players, paving the way for a new era of social media and sports convergence.
Wall Street Journal, a highly-esteemed international newspaper, found themselves in a peculiar position yesterday when they themselves became the topic of the news. The newspaper sparked outrage on social media after they confused two renowned black gymnasts on the US women’s gymnast team, Simone Biles and Shilese Jones.
On October 9, WSJ posted an article on X that paid homage to the most decorated gymnast of all time, Simone Biles. The photo in the article, however, was not of Biles, but of her teammate Shilese Jones, who is an equally talented gymnast in her own right.
The post on social media read, “With 37 world and Olympic medals now, Simone Biles added to her extraordinary legacy at the world championships in Belgium”
Social media buzzing
According to one redditor, the post stayed on X for a few hours until Biles herself caught the photo mishap.
The 26-year old Olympian then reposted the photo and captioned it, “this picture isn’t even me…….. try again”.
After finally realizing their terrible mistake, they deleted the post and reposted the article on their website using the correct photo of Biles this time. They then commented on Biles’ post, saying “We have corrected the photo in the story and on social media.”
We have corrected the photo in the story and on social media.
When the news of this photo incident spread, many were quick to criticize the media outlet and question their credibility, with some noting that the two gymnasts clearly have a different stature, and any fan would be able to discern the difference.
One user even commented, “Thank you for reminding me that even with black excellence comes a lot of black discrimination. It is not hard for a journalist to look up the correct picture of the correct person. I’m sorry this happened to you. Continue being amazing.”

While another user pointed out that although Jones was equally deserving of being featured in their publication, they still should have gotten the photo right, “@ShileseJ is definitely worthy of the spotlight but the @WSJ should have gotten your photo right. And then published a separate story featuring Shilese, a rising star and America’s *next* sweetheart.”

Kathy Johnson, an ESPN/ABC commentator, posted an apology on X after sharing the initial WSJ article:
“My heartfelt apology for sharing something that was clearly insensitive to @Simone_Biles and every Black athlete who has had an incorrect photo assigned to them. It was unintentional, but I accept responsibility for seeming not to know better, especially when I actually DO know.”

Although the post has been removed and the article has been revised, X users went on to rail against the newspaper, claiming that what they had done was deeply offensive to black athletes and that they had yet to post an apology for Biles.

“I wasn’t nervous or anything. I think I was almost overly confident in my openers cause we have just been doing so many reps at those weights that I feel like maybe I just took it for granted. But coming back from it, I think like the pressure of us getting closer to the end of these qualification for Paris makes it like, you’re just going to will it in place ‘cause like, no way I’m letting this go.”, Delacruz said.
She achieved a total weight of 200 kg and reached the podium with the record. The first place went to China’s Jiang Huihuan who achieved a world record of 215kg in the 49 kg division and the second place went to the Olympic gold medalist Hou Zhihui who had a total weight of 211 kg.
“I had no idea until I got off and then Spencer said I got a bronze in clean and jerk.” Delacruz told USA Weightlifting in an interview.
